Gary Baseman painted Little Poet, a 3 x 4 ft painting available at GiantRobot Art, for which all proceeds go to UNICEF for Japanese Earthquake Victims. The painting was painted live during a performance with Nightmare & the Cat in Little Toyko, Los Angeles this month.

The Seaweed Gatherer, Inis Oirr, Aran Islands
The island women gathered dulisk, an edible seaweed, from the rocks at low tide, and carried it in creels on their backs for as much as a couple of miles to their homes. The dulisk was sold to merchants on the mainland. The women also helped the men gather seaweed for use as manure on the land, or for burning into kelp, from which iodine was extracted.

Like everyone else, I’m sure you’ve all been pondering whether to run out and buy loads of seaweed which is rich in iodine, or potassium iodide which is being prescribed in Japan… and then you read about all the dangers associated with ingesting too much potassium iodide, and its limitations : protects from radioactive iodine but not other forms of radioactivity.
